The newborn is a child under 28 days of age.
Birth is marked by the transition from intrauterine life to air life, and from a state of total dependence to autonomy. This transition involves adaptation phenomena, rapid and vital for breathing and circulation, more progressive for other functions.
Main objectives of newborn care:
• prevent specific risks by obstetric anamnesis;
• check the quality of adaptation to ectopic life and ensure the normality of major physiological functions;
• appreciate maturity and trophicity;
• detect possible birth defects or malformations;
• identify individual risk factors;
• diagnose and treat pathologies of the early neonatal period;
• ensure the development of a satisfactory mother-child relationship;
• give appropriate childcare advice and answer parents’ questions.
